Radiochemistry

Instrumentation for the analysis of 210Pb, 137Cs, 226Ra, 234Th, and 7Be are all available in the radiochemistry lab. Equipment includes: two ultra-low-background, planar germanium detectors with low-background shields, four alpha counters, and computer-based multi-channel analyzers controlled by ORTEC Maestro software.

Sedimentology

Basic instrumentation for analysis of sediment texture and sedimentary structure is available in the Sedimentology lab. Equipment includes: a -1.0 to 5.0 phi set of 1/4 phi-interval research sieves, a ro-tap, a Sedigraph 5100, portable and cabinet x-ray machines, a sediment impregnation system, and a petrographic microscope.

Geophysics

All geophysical data are collected using a Triton-Elics ISIS digital acquisition system and an EPC 1086 graphic recorder. Capabilities include subbottom profiling using an Applied Acoustics boomer system and 8-element streamer and sidescan sonar surveying using a digital Klein 2000 towfish and 50-m kevlar cable.

Geographic Information System (GIS)

The system presently consists of ARCGIS 9.0, IMAGINE 8.7, ARCVIEW 3.3 and extensions (Network, Spatial, 3-D and Image Analyst), a 2.5-GHz PC with SCSI internal and external (CD, DVD, Magneto-Optical and DLT) storage devices and a large-format, flatbed UMAX scanner.
