Black Sea Bass
Dr. Richard Lee is experimenting with raising black sea bass for the sushi market in a “mariculture” setting. The bass are growing to market size in about half the time required using traditional methods.
Coastal Water Quality Declining Dr. Peter Verity has shown that the level of “nutrients” in Georgia's inshore waters is increasing steadily along with the level of algae (phytoplankton.) The level of dissolved oxygen is declining and the area fishermen’s catches of shrimp, crab and “desirable” fish have been declining.
Coastal Radar System Dr. Dana Savidge has installed a high frequency, low power radar system on St. Catherine’s Island which measures currents and waves across the entire Georgia shelf. The system creates maps with hundreds of “data points” which are updated every hour.
Real Time Constant Ocean Observation Dr. Jim Nelson has been instrumental in developing a system of real-time, constant ocean observation.

The Skidaway Institute of Oceanography (SkIO) is an autonomous research unit of the University System of Georgia . The mission of the Institute is to provide the State of Georgia with a nationally and internationally recognized center of excellence in marine science.
