Summer Internship Program |
General Information
The institute offers summer research internships that are competitively based and are typically directed towards undergraduate students (or recent undergraduate degree recipients). The purpose is to provide summer research opportunities for students to facilitate their career choices and development, and to encourage appreciation by students of the facilities, resources, and faculty available at SkIO for graduate school research and advisement.
Interested students should carefully review the research conducted by SkIO faculty, and then contact a faculty member who has similar interests to see if s/he would like to sponsor the student for the summer. Once a satisfactory pairing is established, the student in conjunction with the sponsor submits an application to the institute Education Coordinator [Dr. Peter Verity ]. Alternatively, a student may just submit an application without a faculty sponsor, although advance communication and planning between the student and a receptive faculty sponsor will enhance the likelihood for success.
Please contact the Education Coordinator with questions.
Application Materials and Deadline
The following components are required: a cover letter from the student, an official or unofficial transcript, and a resume. If known, the nature of the student's proposed summer project may be described. A cover letter from a faculty sponsor is also encouraged but not required.
Application Deadline and Office
Applications should be submitted to the Education Coordinator on or before February 15; later applications will be considered as long as funds are available.
Decision Process and Award Notification
Award decisions will be based upon the quality of the student, application materials, and suggested internship project. The director's office will notify faculty sponsors, or in their absence the students themselves, of decisions regarding their applications. Final decisions are expected to be made by March 15, or as soon as reasonably possible in the case of applications received after that date.
Timeframe for Internships
Starting and stopping dates are to be determined by student and faculty sponsor jointly. The dates do not need to be determined prior to submitting an application.
Each intern may earn up to $2000 of institutional support during this period; typically this includes $1000 per month for two months assuming a full-time internship. Part-time internships for longer periods can be set up on an individual basis with faculty sponsors, up to an institutional maximum of $2000. A longer internship can be arranged if the faculty sponsor provides any funds required in excess of $2000. |
