As an autonomous research unit for the University System of Georgia, SkIO exists as a unique educational asset to the 35 other System campuses. SkIO offers a coastal marine environment conveniently located near pristine saltmarsh study sites; small boat and research vessel access to coastal marine waters and sediments; and state-of-the art research facilities and staff for the training and research experience of graduate and undergraduate students System-wide.

Although SkIO does not independently confer degrees, our research faculty hold approximately 30 adjunct appointments at System institutions and other US universities, and serve as members and chairs of graduate thesis committees. Graduate-level lecture courses are taught by SkIO faculty via Distance Learning technology to the Georgia Tech and Georgia Southern University campuses. In the past, an eight-week intensive field course in Coastal Oceanography and Marine Field Methods has been offered. When offered this summer course is cross-listed in both Georgia Tech and UGA catalogs. The CIRE II and BIOMP programs offer unique collaborations between SkIO and Savannah State University aimed toward enhancing research opportunities for SSU science students. Current cooperative internship programs with Mannheim Fachhochschule of Biotechnology in Germany, the Fachhochschule Hagenberg of Computer Sciences in Austria, and the Universities of Lisbon and Aveiro in Portugal bring international students to SkIO for extended periods to learn new technologies and collaborate with US students.
