About Us

Welcome to Skidaway Institute of Oceanography!

Founded in 1968, SkIO is a non-degree-granting campus of the University System of Georgia that catalyzes collaboration in leading-edge research, education and public service and policy in Georgia and the southeastern coastal region. The Institute conducts leading edge research on marine and coastal systems, trains tomorrow's marine scientists, serves as a gateway to marine environments, and integrates University System marine programs. We are committed to excellence in research and education and to the communication of our understanding of marine systems. The goal of the Institute is to create a more knowledgeable citizen capable of appreciating coastal natural environments and the conditions required to sustain them while capitalizing on coastal economic opportunities.

These are exciting times on campus. Now in our 40th year, we have added several new faculty and are searching for more, have a new dorm in place, new instrumental capabilities, and a new research building under construction. In addition, our collaborations with Savannah State University's graduate program in Marine Science continue, and we have begun a new, joint graduate program in Coastal Science and Engineering with Georgia Institute of Technology - Savannah. Interesting projects are underway, the research fleet is active, and the campus is alive with visiting scientists and students. It is a good time for you to become better acquainted with us, and I look forward to hearing from you.
